PBS's Tavis Smiley Suggests 'Empire' Shows The Worst In Black People
PBS’s Tavis Smiley Suggests ‘Empire’ Shows The Worst In Black People
PBS host Tavis Smiley‘s conversation with Larry King will air later tonight (April 7). The two will probably converse on many topics, and one will be FOX’s hit show Empire. Smiley doesn’t sound like too big of a fan.
“There is a debate in the black community that hasn’t really surfaced, hasn’t really boiled to the top yet, but I hear it in barber shops and other places that whether the problem with Empire is that it advances the worst of every pathology that black people have – crime and drug dealing and this and that and the other,” Smiley says in the above clip. “A lot of people are looking for positive characters that may come out in the second season. But the first season everybody is ahhh!“
The man’s entitled to his opinion, but it’s interesting he (in this clip at least) makes no mention of empowering characters like Taraji P. Henson’s Cookie or Jussie Smollett’s Jamal. Also you have to at least address that Black-ish (which runs the same night as Empire) at least partially addresses the issue Smiley is referring to.
The conversation will be on PoliticKING with Larry King, which airs 11 pm EST on RT America.
