Steph Curry might have just won the NBA’s coveted MVP award, but a couple years ago he seemed like a still-unlikely star. At least that’s probably what Nike was thinking when they low-balled Curry with an undersized endorsement offer not once but twice.
“Two years ago, Nike had a chance to pay Curry a lot of money and lock him up for the future. After offering less than $2.5 million a year, Nike had a second chance — this time to match Under Armour’s new offer,” ESPN’s Darren Rovell wrote in a recent piece. “Unsure that Curry would ever be able to sell signature shoes, Nike let him go.”
Meanwhile, Under Armour is doing pretty well with Curry and ESPN reports that the star’s signature shoe is “essentially sold out, save for sizes 14, 15, and 16.”
An Under Armour exec summed up Curry’s appeal in the market. “On the court, he plays basketball like it’s a video game and someone young players can, and want to, emulate because of his size, handle, shot, strong work ethic, and basketball IQ,” an executive told ESPN. “Off the court, his humility, authenticity, and leadership style are qualities that fans of all ages appreciate and respect.” For now, Curry just keeps on winning all over the place.
