By now, most readers have heard about Rachel Dolezal. If you haven’t, she’s the White president of the NAACP’s Spokane Washington branch who has been passing as Black with a really impressive “natural” hairstyle/wig/weave/perm and an interesting bronzer that John Boehner would envy.

At first, it was all jokes, but now some people — mostly transphobic people, but some genuinely confused ones — have serious questions about the ignorance that is so-called “transracial” identity. The question being: If race is a social construct, then does Dolezal have the right to self-determine her Blackness?
