London’s New Mayor Dismisses Trump’s Muslim Ban Exception
Last week, London elected its first-ever Muslim mayor, Sadiq Khan, prompting presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump to extend an olive branch, of sorts, to the son of working-class Pakistani immigrants, reports the BBC.
Trump offered to make an exception for Khan regarding a ban on Muslims traveling to the U.S., but the longtime politician rejected the offer, saying, “This isn’t just about me,” reports the news outlet:
“It’s about my friends, my family and everyone who comes from a background similar to mine, anywhere in the world,” he said.
Mr Khan also warned that Mr Trump’s “ignorant” views of Islam “could make both our countries less safe.”
Mr Trump said he was “happy” that Mr Khan would be leading London.
The 45-year-old beat out a conservative challenger “who controversially attempted to implicate Khan with connections to Islamist extremists,” writes the BBC.
Khan told the news outlet that he supports Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton for president, saying, “I hope she trounces him.”
