One of the busiest airports in the world, Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, announced beginning construction for terminal F on Tuesday.

This will make the Sixth terminal in DFW Airport. According to NBC5 this will be built on the southwest side of the airport next to its current Express South parking lot, it will be connected to the remainder of the airport by a Skylink station, the terminal will be a 15-gate terminal unlike the crescent form of the other five.

Officials of airports described a $1.6 billion initiative meant to equip North Texas and the airport for the future.

In 2023 DFW Airport had a record setting year of nearly 80 million passengers move through the airport. With the new renovations in the works, Sean Donohue, CEO of DFW Airport says he expects 90 million passengers in 2024.

The original plans for a new 24-gate terminal was in 2019, however because of the pandemic and low demand in travel pushed the project back to May 2023. Now, they’ve made the decision to make it a 15-gate project.

American Airlines and the airport still plan to spend an additional $3.2 billion on other airport improvements, including renovation and expansion of Terminals A and C.

Terminal F is expected to be operational in 2027.
