Teddy Bear National Mall Ukrainian Children Killed In War Memorial

A moving tribute near the Washington Monument on Friday honored hundreds of children killed during Ukraine’s war with Russia. Six hundred teddy bears, each labeled with a child’s name, were laid across the National Mall, symbolizing the innocent lives lost.

The display was organized by Rescue Ukraine, led by Jeff Abrams, a preacher who has visited Ukraine for over 30 years. Abrams shared a haunting memory of seeing a teddy bear and flowers left on a bench in Ukraine where a 14-year-old girl named Sophia had died in a missile strike just days earlier. Jeff Plaster, a U.S. Army veteran and longtime Ukraine resident, highlighted the broader tragedy, noting that thousands of Ukrainian children have been abducted since the war began.

After the ceremony, many of the teddy bears will be sent to Ukraine to comfort children in orphanages and hospitals, offering a small gesture of hope amidst the ongoing devastation.
