Shots Ring Out Again At Wilmer Hutchins High School
In a tragic repeat of last year, Wilmer Hutchins High School in Dallas was rocked by gunfire Tuesday afternoon. Around 1pm shots were fired on the campus, leaving a 17-year-old student wounded and at least three others injured.
Dallas ISD officials say the building was quickly secured and students were evacuated to the football field. Police are actively searching for a student believed to be involved in the shooting. As of now, no arrests have been made.
This marks the second shooting at Wilmer Hutchins in exactly one year. Last April 2024, a student was shot during a classroom altercation, sparking student protests and promises for the district to tighten security. Metal detectors, bag checks and clear backpacks policies were all part of the changes. Today’s violence has raised fresh concerns about whether those measures are being enforced consistently.
Parents raced to the school, many emotional and angry demanding answers. One father told reporters his daughter heard live gunshots from the lunchroom. “We can’t keep doing this,” he said.
Dallas ISD Superintendent Stephanie Elizalde is calling for community-wide accountability. “This can’t just be on schools,” she said. “It’s all of us, parents, neighbors, city leaders. We have to be part of the solution.”
As students heal and the investigation continues, many are left wondering how safe their school really is and what will it take to make lasting change.
